COMMON EYE PROBLEMS

Nothing’s more precious than your sight. And while some eye problems are minor and don’t last long, others can lead to a permanent loss of vision. That’s why at Florida Eye Specialists and Cataract Institute, we’ve created a world-class, all-encompassing practice to deliver you the highest quality eye care. We examine, improve, and help you retain your vision – no matter what your problem or condition may be.

Eye and vision problems effect people of all ages. Regular checkups are your best defense because many eye diseases don’t have symptoms. Early detection and treatment can help prevent vision loss.

Some of the most common eye problems we see include:

Nearsightedness (Myopia) & Farsightedness (Hyperopia) – are the most common vision problems. When you have Farsightedness, you’re able to see things that are far away, but have trouble seeing things up close. Nearsightedness is the opposite – nearby objects are visible but faraway objects are out of focus.

Astigmatism – a common vision problem that causes distorted, fuzzy, or blurry vision as a result of an irregular curve in your eye’s lens or cornea.

Eyelid Inflammation (Blepharitis) – an inflammation of the eyelid, usually where the eyelashes grow. While its cause is unclear, we have several treatments available that provide relief and reduce redness.

Eye Floaters & Flashing Lights – Floaters are specks, strings or spots in your vision, most commonly caused by age-related changes to the eye. They can be normal, but can sometimes indicate a more serious eye problem, such as retinal detachment, especially if they are accompanied by light flashes. Flashing or flickering lights are also associated with optic neuritis, an inflammation of the optic nerve.

Cataracts – dense, cloudy areas that slowly form within the eye lens. Light cannot get through the lens as easily, resulting in impaired vision. While more common in older people, they can also be present at birth or caused by medications, disease, trauma, or radiation.

Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis) – an infection and inflammation of the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the white part of the eye. The white of the eye takes on a pink or red color, with itching, burning, tearing, or a feeling of something in the eye. Common in adults and children, it’s contagious and spreads quickly.

Crossed Eyes (Strabismus) – when a person cannot align both eyes on an object at the same time. The occurs in about 5% of children, but many adults can suffer also. Left untreated, it can lead to serious vision damage.

Glaucoma – usually caused by abnormally high pressure inside the eye, then progressive deterioration of the optic nerve and vision loss. Because glaucoma usually has no early symptoms or pain, it’s very important to get your eyes checked regularly.

Diabetic Retinopathy – people with Type 1 or 2 diabetes can have damage to the blood vessels of the eye’s retina, with minor visual problems but eventually causing blindness.

Lazy Eye (Amblyopia) – reduced vision in one eye, usually caused by the brain not properly acknowledging information. Usually seen in children under six, it can cause serious vision damage if untreated.

Age Related Macular Degeneration – the most common form of sharp, central vision loss in people age 50+, when the macula (an important part of the retina) is damaged. If caught early, proper treatment can minimize vision loss.

Dry Eyes – caused by environmental factors, dry eye syndrome, medications, and other causes, resulting in the tear glands not producing enough tears. We have many solutions that can improve your comfort and eliminate the itching and burning.

Presbyopia – the loss of the ability to clearly see close objects or small print. It’s a natural change in our eyes’ ability to focus, and focus quickly, especially as we get older.

Eye Injuries (Ocular Trauma) – any type of distress that occurs in or near the eye, from an accident, scratch, puncture or contamination. Eye emergencies require immediate medical attention to prevent permanent vision damage.

Within our comprehensive practice, we treat all vision conditions. We provide you with safe, minimally invasive treatments to effectively relieve symptoms and preserve vision and overall eye health.
