Most people can relate to the sneezing and runny nose caused by seasonal irritants. Those with eye allergies will experience red, itchy, watery eyes, and swollen eyelids. We know that an estimated 50 million people in the United States have seasonal allergies – affecting 30% of adults and up to 40% of children. As we approach allergy season we want to share 8 tips for eye allergy sufferers that will allow you to enjoy the season instead of hiding indoors.
1. Get ahead of it.
Use a local pollen count map so you are aware of what days will have higher levels of allergens. Those with severe allergies may want to check in with their primary care physician to see what options they have available to reduce their sensitivity to allergens.
2. Seek clarity.
Understanding the primary causes of your eye allergies will allow you to do your best to avoid them and/or limit your exposure to them.
3. Protect your eyes.
You can limit your exposure to airborne allergies by wearing wrap-around style eyeglasses.
4. Limit direct touch.
Even if your eyes itch, you can reduce your symptoms by not touching them. In fact, when you rub your eyes it releases more histamines which worsen your symptoms.
5. Use artificial tears for flushing.
You can consult your primary care physician on which brands to use, but we recommend using plenty of artificial tears to wash out airborne allergies at the onset of any symptoms.
6. Reduce your use of contacts.
When you use the same pair of contacts over an extended period of time, you can collect a buildup of allergens. If you prefer contacts over eyeglasses, we recommend switching to daily disposable contacts during the times of the year when your eye allergies are the worst.
7. Shower at night.
Airborne allergies attach themselves to your hair, eyebrows, and skin throughout the day. Showering at night reduces the amount that is then transferred to your bed and particularly pillows, which can easily cause irritation as you lie down on them for hours every night.
8. Invest in good filters.
Purchase air filters that are designed to trap and collect airborne allergies. You may even consider purchasing an air purifier for your home to help reduce your exposure and increase your comfort.
