October is National Audiology Awareness Month — Florida Eye Specialists & Cataract Institute Hearing Center Reminds the Public of the Detriments of Untreated Hearing Loss.

Brandon & Sun City, FL, October 2025 — October is National Audiology Awareness Month, and Florida Eye Specialists & Cataract Institute Hearing Center is raising awareness about the importance of hearing health.

“Hearing is our basis of communication; it is how we form relationships and connects us to the people around us. An untreated hearing loss not only has effects on quality life but detriments to our overall health,” said Dr. Lauren Fessler, AuD, Head of Audiology. “Untreated hearing loss is linked to an increased risk of falls, cognitive decline, dementia, and reduced quality of life. The good news is that early treatment can help mitigate the overall effects of hearing loss on the brain and the body, increasing engagement in conversation, social activities and reducing the risk of anxiety and depression.

About 28.8 million Americans could benefit from hearing aids, according to the National Institutes of Health. Hearing changes often occur gradually with our significant others noticing their effects before we do.

Finding the right provider for you, know the difference:

Audiologist

  • Education & Training:
    • Must have a Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.) or equivalent (8+ years of post-secondary education).
    • Extensive training in hearing, balance disorders, and related pathologies.
    • Must pass national exams and obtain state licensure.
  • Scope of Practice:
    • Diagnose and treat a wide range of hearing and balance disorders.
    • Perform comprehensive hearing evaluations.
    • Provide auditory rehabilitation, tinnitus management, and balance testing.
    • Can prescribe and fit hearing aids, but also determine if hearing loss is due to a medical issue needing referral (e.g., to an ENT).
  • Setting:
    • Often found in hospitals, ENT clinics, private practices, universities, and research settings.

Hearing Aid Dispenser (or Hearing Instrument Specialist)

  • Education & Training:
    • Typically requires a high school diploma or GED, plus completion of a training program or apprenticeship.
    • Must pass a state licensing exam specific to hearing aid dispensing.
  • Scope of Practice:
    • Conducts basic hearing tests (screenings) to determine if a person could benefit from a hearing aid.
    • Fits and sells hearing aids.
    • Cannot diagnose medical conditions or treat complex hearing/balance disorders.
    • Must refer patients to a medical professional if a medical issue is suspected.
  • Setting:
    • Often works in hearing aid retail chains, private clinics, or independent offices.
